Panagia Paraportiani Church

The Church of Panagia Paraportiani is one of the most important religious and architectural landmarks of Mykonos, located in the area of Kastro, near the old harbor. Its name, meaning “Our Lady of the Side Gate,” comes from its position next to the entrance of the medieval castle that once protected the town.

Construction began in the late 14th century and continued over several centuries, resulting in a unique complex of five interconnected chapels built in different periods. The asymmetrical shape, whitewashed surfaces, and flowing lines create a striking example of Cycladic architecture, admired for its simplicity and harmony with the landscape. Panagia Paraportiani is one of the most photographed churches in Greece and a symbol of Mykonos’ cultural identity. Its bright white form against the deep blue of the Aegean embodies the timeless beauty of the Cyclades, making it a must-visit site for anyone exploring the island’s history and heritage.
